Fob problems we see most

  • A lost or damaged remote or smart key
  • A cracked shell or broken buttons
  • “Key not detected” messages on push-to-start vehicles
  • Needing an additional fob for another driver

Sometimes the fix is as small as a battery. If that is the case, we will tell you on the phone rather than send a technician.

Programming, explained

A fob has to be paired with the vehicle before it works. Depending on the car, that pairing covers the remote functions (lock, unlock, trunk), the immobilizer (so the engine will start), or both. Proximity smart keys are paired so the car senses them for keyless entry and push-button start.

Programming procedures and requirements differ by year, model and key system, so we confirm your vehicle before the visit.

Fob, smart key or remote-head key?

  • Remote-head key: a metal blade with lock and unlock buttons built into the head.
  • Key fob: a separate remote, often with a fold-out or hidden emergency blade.
  • Smart / proximity key: stays in your pocket; the car detects it for keyless entry and push-button start.

Each type is programmed differently. Tell us which one you have — or send a photo — and we will confirm what your vehicle needs.

Before you call: try the battery

Weak range, buttons that work only up close, or a “key not detected” message that comes and goes often point to a tired battery. A coin cell is inexpensive and easy to change. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may need re-pairing or replacement — that is where we come in.

Locksmith or dealership for a fob?

For many vehicles, a locksmith can supply and program a replacement fob or smart key at the car, without a service appointment. Some vehicles require dealer-only procedures; when that is the case for yours, we tell you on the phone rather than sending a technician.

Common questions

Can you program a fob I bought online?

Sometimes. Many aftermarket or used fobs are locked to another vehicle or are the wrong frequency or part. Call us with the part details and we will tell you honestly whether it is likely to work.

Will my existing fobs keep working?

On most vehicles, yes — your existing keys are re-paired along with the new one. If you want a lost fob removed from the car, tell us.

Why did my key fob suddenly stop working?

The most common causes are a dead battery, worn button contacts, water damage, or the fob losing its pairing with the car. A new battery is the first thing to try.

Can I program a key fob myself?

Some older vehicles have an owner programming procedure for remotes. Most modern immobilizer keys and smart keys require professional programming equipment.

Do you sell the replacement fob, or do I bring one?

We can supply a replacement fob or smart key for many vehicles. If you already bought one, call with the part details first so we can tell you whether it is likely to work.
